Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens):
I was fishing at Rock Lake in Canada when I saw my first and only live Sturgeon. The only fish that comes close on the ugly scale to a Sturgeon is the Dog Fish. Anyway we were fishing small minnows off the bottom for Perch or Bass and we caught this dinosaur looking fish. Everyone in the boat was dumb founded and wondered if we weren't part of some elaborate joke.
None of us thought about eating it but the dilemma arose as to what we should do with it. If it was some kind of illegally introduced species we didn't want to throw it back. On the other hand it was such a strange and unusual fish that we thought it might be rare or endangered. In the end we released the monster and it fish swam away from us into the deep alive and well. Later that day we learned from my Grandfather Boyd that it was a Sturgeon. The fish was about 20 inches long and just a baby as Sturgeon can live up to a one hundred years. This story took place over 25 years ago so that alien fish might still be swimming around in Rock Lake. At least we like to think so.
