Dedication To My Grandfathers
Robert Kirkwood Fishing Story Continued:
and neither had the person who got the first hit.
I don't remember who it was but that bobber went under and they set the hook like you're supposed to or so we thought. Anyway the people who new Pike take a bobber under twice and you have to wait for the second dunk before setting the hook, about chided and tossed that person outa the boat.
What seemed like hours went by after that one strike we caught a couple of Pike. In each case we waited until the bobber came up the second time. About that time my bobber goes under and know one notices but me. Problem is it doesn't come back up so I say my bobber went under and never came back up.
After a brief discussion about it's probably a Bass or Catfish I'm told to start reeling in the line at which time the fight is on. Shortly into the battle it's apparent that I'm making zero ground on getting that fish any closer to the boat because I can't even turn the handle. Whatever it is actually leans the boat over to the side it's on which causes a couple of people to scurry backwards to the other side. With my Dad's help we manage to horse whatever it is close enough to see that big red bobber and twang the line breaks.
To this day we never knew what it was but after many speculations and discussions with more prominent fisherman of the area it was determined that it was most likely a giant sturgeon.
