Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss):
Rainbow Trout have a pinkish or reddish band or rainbow which runs along the side of a Rainbow Trout along the length of the fish. Rainbows are dark olive green to black on the back and belly is white and or silver. Another visual feature of the Rainbow Trout is black spots on the back, dorsal fin and tail.
Our favorite way to catch Rainbow Trout is to troll flies or small flatfish on fly rods. The fish shown below was caught
on a olive colored brass bead head nymph imitation, fly rod with sinking line, and a small piece of split shot. If you've read our Cutthroat page this same method was used to catch the Rainbow Trout shown above.
In fishing the unexpected fish or strike is what always keep me going back time and again to fish. With the above shown Rainbow I had been trolling the shore line and decided to troll further into the back of this one cove. Hits and strikes let alone any fish just weren't happening. About the same second I thought it's too shallow better turn around my line cut through the water with a loud hiss and my rod bend in half. My thought of great I'm snagged was ended abruptly as this Rainbow Trout erupted clean out of the water. This was a thick fat fish and with only 8 inches of 2lb. test between glory and defeat there was no horsing this fish. After a couple of runs and more jumps and lots of prayers that the fish was jaw hooked I scooped the fish into the net.
