Lake Trout (Salvelinus Namaycush):

The Lake Trout are mostly found in Canada, Alaska, the Northern US and the Great Lakes region. Lake Trout get large in part due to their foracious diets. Lake Trout feed on just about anything that swims, crawls or floats by including fresh water shrimp, crustations, other fish and even small animals like mice.

Lake Trout

If you are going fishing for Lake Trout without a guide or someone who has fished the area here are some suggestions. You have got to have downriggers. Most Lake Trout are caught near the bottom in depths up to 100 plus feet. Make sure you have some Spoons with good wobble action in your tackle box. Set each trolling rig up with a different weight ball, spoon or crank bait, and set the rigger depth differently. You can also experiment with leader lengths between the ball and lure. 2 - 5 feet is a good working distance. Optimum trolling speed is around 3 mph. Don't be afraid to bump and nudge the trottle up and down until you get into the fish. Once you catch a Lake Trout set your rigs to the combination of lure, ball size, leader and speed.
