Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarki):
There are many subspecies of Cutthroat Trout. Here in Arizona our cutthroat are almost pure silver with dark backs and the lower fins are sometimes tinted with orange or red highlights. In most states the Cutthroat will only grow to 15 inches on average. We in Arizona are blessed in that they get up to 20 inches or larger. The Arizona State Record Cuthroat Trout is 6 lb. 5.0 oz. 22.3 in..
Our favorite way to catch Cutthrout Trout is to troll flies or small flatfish on fly rods. The fish shown below was caught
on a olive colored brass bead head nymph imitation, fly rod with sinking line, and a small peice of split shot. The extra weight because our mountain lakes are often very windy. The higher winds mean you have to move faster to fish the water you want but slow trolls with occassional short jerks and long pulls on the line works best.
